2023 Chevrolet Malibu
The Chevy Malibu is the only remaining midsize family sedan in Chevy's lineup, and one of the few left on the roads today. That means it has to compete in terms of performance, luxury, comfort, and technology, and it absolutely delivers. It boasts a large cabin with plenty of room for passengers and a superior touchscreen infotainment interface, and this year comes with fewer trim levels with reshuffled features and standard safety features at every level. Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2023 Chevy Malibu is available in four trim levels. The base trim is the LS, which is followed by the mid-tier RS, the luxury-oriented LT, and the top-tier 2LT trim level. Colors include Mineral Gray Metallic, Dark Ash Metallic, Summit White, Mosaic Black Metallic, Riverside Blue Metallic, Radiant Red Tintcoat, and Sterling Gray Metallic. Special editions include the Sport Edition and Midnight Edition, the latter of which offers black wheels, front and rear emblems, and badging. The Redline edition nets you black and red nameplate badging.
Engine (Power)
This year's Chevy Malibu drops last year's optional 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine and nine-speed automatic transmission in favor of a more practical single powertrain that offers improved fuel economy for family road trips. The sole engine in the current lineup is a 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that generates 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and is available in front-wheel drive. The new approach embraces the Malibu as a family ride.
Performance
Though the 2022 model had an optional, more powerful engine, the inline-four that now powers the Malibu offers a sleek ride with plenty of comfort. The acceleration is authoritative and the handling is athletic and composed. The braking is also solid. As you would expect from a family sedan, it corners well with low body roll. Even better, it offers an EPA-estimated 27 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway (a combined 30 miles per gallon) in fuel economy.
Interior
The cabin is luxurious with plenty of room for even adults to comfortably sit in the back seat. The materials are high quality and the infotainment controls on the 8-inch touchscreen are easy to reach and intuitive to use so you won't have to take your eyes off the road. You'll get 15.7 cubic feet of space for luggage in the trunk. Even at the base level, you get wireless smartphone integration and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The 2LT trim brings luxury features like leather upholstery and nine-speaker premium Bose sound.
Safety Features
The base-level safety features on the LS trim include front collision mitigation to warn you of an impending crash and apply emergency braking, lane-departure mitigation to keep you from drifting, and a back-seat check reminder. An optional driver confidence package allows you to add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts as well as rear parking sensors. The top 2LT trim's driver confidence and cruise package also adds adaptive cruise control and semi-automated parking plus automatic emergency braking at high speeds.
